Nitecore UT27 MB — The Headlamp That Runs as Light as You Wish You Did

Trail running at 2 a.m. is already a weird enough life choice. The last thing you need is a brick strapped to your forehead while you're picking your way down a root-covered descent at stupid o'clock. TorchMonster reckons the UT27 MB is what happens when someone actually thought hard about what a trail runner needs — rather than just bolting a bigger battery to an existing headlamp and calling it innovation.

Pick Your Light, Pick Your Moment

The UT27 MB runs four distinct light sources off two quad-core MCT UHE LEDs, and the colour temperature options are genuinely useful rather than just a spec-sheet flex. Warm white at 3000K (CRI 98) renders colour so accurately it's almost unsettling — handy when you're reading trail markers or deciding whether that puddle is ankle-deep or thigh-deep. Neutral white at 4500K (CRI 85) is your workhorse setting for general running. Cool white at 6500K (CRI 73) sharpens contrast on technical terrain. All three top out at 800 lumens with a 168-metre throw, delivered through Nitecore's TrueVision+ multi-faceted optical lens, which pushes out a smooth, even flood beam rather than that annoying hot-spot-surrounded-by-darkness pattern that makes roots disappear right when you need to see them.

The Red Light Is Not an Afterthought

A lot of headlamps bolt on a token red LED and call it done — usually something dim enough to be barely useful for finding your tent zip. The UT27 MB's red light hits 150 lumens with a 70-metre throw. That's a main-light-level red, which matters because some trail races have red-light-only sections to protect other runners' night vision. You can actually run those sections at pace instead of shuffling along half-blind. It also runs SOS and slow-flash warning modes, and on a steady low red setting it'll run for up to 21 hours — longer than your colour temperature modes, which max out at 14.5 hours.

74 Grams and a Backup Plan

The whole unit weighs 74 grams. To put that in perspective, a standard AA battery weighs about 23 grams, so you're essentially wearing three batteries' worth of weight on your head and getting an actual headlamp thrown in for free. Power comes via the included HLB1500 1500mAh Li-ion battery pack with USB-C charging, or you can swap in 3 x AAA alkalines if the pack runs out mid-event and you're raiding a convenience store at 3 a.m. The bracket tilts 90°, the IP66 rating handles rain and dust without complaint, and the glow-in-the-dark battery compartment means you can find and swap batteries in the dark without turning it into a fumble-fest. Impact resistance to 1 metre covers the moment you drop it while doing exactly that.

TorchMonster loves that the red light on this thing isn't decorative — 150 lumens at 70 metres means it's genuinely race-legal and actually functional, like having a proper emergency flare that also happens to sit politely on your head for 21 hours without going flat.
